PA Pre-K Counts: Helping Build a Brighter Future

February 3, 2020

The Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette Inc.’s Pennsylvania Pre-K Counts program provides an exceptional learning opportunity for preschoolers.

PA Pre-K Counts is a high-quality pre-kindergarten education program for 3- and 4-year-olds in Pennsylvania with a focus on children at risk of academic failure because of income (300% of the federal poverty level or a family of four earning $78,600.00). This incredible program is offered to families who meet income guidelines at no cost to them. PA Pre-K Counts is open to children who are residents of Pennsylvania and who are 3 or 4 years of age by the kindergarten cut-off date at their respective school district.

Classrooms typically follow school district schedules as well as their attendance policies. Each classroom has a certified teacher in Early Childhood Education and a classroom assistant. Certified Early Childhood Education teachers prepare children for Kindergarten with skills in reading and math but also teach them how to pay attention, follow directions and get along with others in a safe, friendly environment.

PA Pre-K Counts classroom sizes are small enough that each child receives quality one-on-one time with the teacher during the six-hour day but still allow children to experience a classroom setting in order to prepare them for Kindergarten and beyond. Children in attendance also receive breakfast and lunch.

Parent participation is highly encouraged. Parents have the opportunity through parent/teacher conferences to stay informed on what their child is learning and if there are any areas that need additional attention. Parents are also invited to attend monthly family engagement activities and also have the opportunity to volunteer in their child’s classroom.

The Private Industry Council has 12 PA Pre-K Counts classrooms across Allegheny, Beaver, Fayette and Westmoreland Counties. In Allegheny County we are currently located at Penn Hills High School, Marzolf Primary School and Reserve Primary School. In Beaver County, we are currently located at Todd Lane Elementary School. In Fayette County we are currently located at Connellsville Township Elementary, Friendship Hill Elementary, Marshall Elementary, Masontown Elementary, Springfield Clifford N. Pritts Elementary and Wharton Elementary. In Westmoreland County we are currently located in Southmoreland Elementary.
